About NPAA

Who We Are

The Nurse Practitioner Association of Alberta (NPAA) is the unified voice of Nurse Practitioners across Alberta. Since its founding in 2004, NPAA has been diligently working within our Mission and Values to change the face of NP practice in Alberta.

We endeavour to increase public awareness of the Nurse Practitioner role and practice — highlighting the critical contributions NPs make across all sectors of care.

For our members, NPAA builds partnerships with key stakeholders across Alberta to remove barriers to practice and celebrate collective successes, including legislative progress and expanded opportunities for NP-led care.

We advocate for policies, programs, and partnerships that empower Nurse Practitioners to deliver safe, effective, and equitable care — strengthening Alberta’s healthcare system through leadership, collaboration, and innovation.

What Drives Us

Our Mission

“Advocating and advancing Nurse Practitioner practice to build a healthier Alberta.”

The NPAA advocates for Nurse Practitioners (NPs) and the vital role they play across Alberta’s healthcare system in delivering accessible, high-quality care. We work to empower NPs, strengthen healthcare delivery across all four pillars of the system, and support innovative models of care that improve access for Albertans. Through leadership, collaboration, and advocacy, we are committed to advancing NP practice and building a stronger, more sustainable healthcare system.

Our Vision

“Nurse Practitioners will be recognized as health care leaders striving to ensure every Albertan has access to expert NP care.”

Our vision guides everything we do — advocating for recognition, leadership, and equitable access to expert NP care across Alberta.

Our Story

NPAA began as a grassroots effort to unite Nurse Practitioners across Alberta. Over two decades, we’ve grown into a province-wide association representing hundreds of members — from students to experienced clinicians — across every corner of the healthcare system.

What We Do

NPAA works to support and elevate Nurse Practitioners through four key focus areas:

Advocacy

We represent NPs at every level of healthcare policy and leadership, working to remove barriers to practice and achieve funding parity.

Education

We share knowledge and provide professional development opportunities to keep Alberta’s NPs at the forefront of patient care.

Collaboration

We partner with government, healthcare organizations, and academic institutions to build stronger, more sustainable healthcare models.

Community

We foster belonging and connection among Nurse Practitioners through networking, events, and member engagement.

We’re always looking for Nurse Practitioners to get involved—whether through leadership, committees, or volunteer opportunities.
