Membership Update: June 21, 2024
Please see recent updates below for June 21, 2024.
In 2021-2023, NPAA was the foundation that supported the formation of the AUNP, which now represents acute care NPs in Alberta.
In 2024, NPAA brought you a direct reimbursement model for NPs in Primary Care.
What’s Next This Year?
- A conference to bring us together; for ALL Nurse Practitioners (including students) in Alberta and Canada.
- Legislative Changes that will improve practice for ALL NPs in Alberta.
This is what membership with the NPAA looks like; delivering on promises and advocating for change that benefits ALL NPs.

Legislative Changes & CRNA Update
We reviewed multiple pieces of legislation that are affecting your practices and the patients that we serve. In February, we submitted a briefing note to government along with specific proposed changes that are essential for them to address. The Minister of Health responded and requested formal endorsement by CRNA. A few weeks ago, we presented to CRNA Council requesting endorsement of these changes. As an update to this initiative, please see the below message from CRNA.
A message from the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta:
“On June 13, 2024, the Council of the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) approved legislative amendments that will eliminate existing barriers for nurse practitioners to provide patient care.
This initiative is the result of a collaborative effort between the NPAA, the CRNA, and other health system partners. The amendments being proposed are comprehensive and seek to address barriers that exist across several legislative statutes, regulations and provincial forms (e.g., disability, AISH, WCB, etc.).
In addition to reducing barriers for nurse practitioners, this initiative also complements the Government of Alberta’s Nurse Practitioner Primary Care Program. The Program expands opportunities for nurse practitioners to practice comprehensive primary care and operate their own independent clinics or practice independently in team-based care settings. The proposed legislative amendments will ensure that nurse practitioners who work in primary care are able to provide comprehensive and longitudinal care to their patients while reducing disruptions to their continuity of care.
Going forward, the CRNA Council will submit the approved legislative amendments to the Government of Alberta for its consideration. The Government of Alberta is the ultimate decision maker on whether all or any of the legislative amendments are considered.
We will continue to keep you updated on how this important work is progressing.”
NP Primary Care Program
To date: 105 EOIs, 41 applications submitted, 4 applications approved.
The first few clinics are anticipated to launch this summer. This is in line with the 6 week review time outlined by Alberta Health.
The grant provided to the NPAA in November is for the purpose of building supports for NPs going into the NP Primary Care Program (NPPCP). It is essential to the success of the program and to our profession that NPs access the available business supports and connections that are being provided by the NPAA and partners.
Education sessions are currently free, but will not be in the future. Not all sessions will be recorded. Take advantage of this opportunity to build your business understanding and connections with key advisors while available.
We are continuing to build these supports and resources. Please watch our website events page and education page for most up to date opportunities.
We will be launching a new membership tier for those in the NPPCP, called Membership PLUS. This is where we will house recorded sessions, legal templates, discounted packages from industry partners (such as EMRs and insurance). This new tier is essential to the sustainability of the program and NPAA. The more members in this tier will enable more negotiating power for us to gain benefits for you.
Please Note: We have created a new special email inbox for the NPPCP. Please email pcprogram@albertanps.com for all inquiries, application questions, and more, for information around the program.
All general inquiries not related to the Program can be sent to hello@albertanps.com
