Mpox

On August 14, 2024, the WHO declared the spread of Mpox virus (clade 1b) on the African continent a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHIEC).   This strain of Mpox has a higher mortality rate than previous strains identified in Canada.  Mpox testing is readily available from the ProvLab in Alberta and can be carried out on the same viral swabs sent for HSV/VZV testing.

Indigenous Hub-and-Spoke Model of Care in PCNs

The Indigenous Support Hub will be a shared resource for healthcare providers in PCNs, offering support on social, cultural, and systemic factors affecting Indigenous Peoples health. Indigenous support workers will participate in virtual case conferencing and collaborative learning with clinicians to provide guidance and advice on best practice care for Indigenous patients.

International Overdose Awareness Day – August 31

International Overdose Awareness Day, held annually on August 31, is a day to raise awareness on prevention of overdose-related deaths. It is also a day on which friends and families come together to remember loved ones who lost their lives due to overdose or poisoning.

Professional development and events

Health professional practice permit renewal

Regulated health professionals must renew their professional registration annually to hold a valid practice permit.

The following health professions must renew their permits by Sept. 30:

  • Paramedicine (ACP, EMR, PCP)
  • Physiotherapists
  • Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners
  • Social Workers (whose permits expire in September)

Syphilis Training

Syphilis and 2S/GBTQ+ People: This module helps healthcare providers manage syphilis in Two-Spirit, gay, bi, trans, and queer men. It covers epidemiology, risk factors, screening, treatment, and the use of Doxy-PEP.

Alberta Caregiver College® Caregivers for Brain Injury and Stroke Survivors

The Alberta Caregiver College® is offering a free course for informal caregivers (family or friends) of brain injury and stroke survivors in the fall and spring. Courses are from 5:00 P.M. – 7:00P.M. via Zoom.
