Questions to be Discussed

1) How does a stimulant improve ADHD symptoms?
2) What are the differences and similarities between amphetamine and
methylphenidate stimulants?
3) What are the differences among the meds within each class? (head-to-head comparisons –
efficacy, superiority, tolerability, a/e, the daily dose (avg), duration of effectiveness / which are
better / worse tolerated than others?)
3)How do non-psychostimulant meds compare (efficacy, tolerance, duration)
4) What are the risks associated with psychostimulants? ( please include common side effects of
psychostimulants (what to educate patient / watch for and include contraindications to
psychostimulants?
Any restrictions -i.e., age / untreated bipolar / heart conditions / physical disorders -? Epilepsy? )
(red flags – i.e., increased agitation, mood dysregulation, weight loss, teeth clenching / jaw pain,
anxiety – psychosis (underlying untreated mood disorder)
5) How are the medications started and up-titrated?
6) Discuss max doses – what if the patient takes more than Rx – what to assess for (risks) /
switching between meds – can you combine – risks of same (i.e., within class / between
classes (include psychostimulant to psychostimulant and non-psycho stimulant – i.e.,
atompxetine and dexidrine)

2) New research – other applications for drug class (i.e., BEDS, Sleep disorder, obesity, ? post-
concussion).
