Introduction to Forensic Health Sciences

Course Description
Forensic health care and forensic nursing is emerging as a new concept in the medical/health care of Canada. This course will provide health care professionals and other related professionals with an introduction to the forensic health sciences and its application to clinical practice in Canada. The Criminal Code of Canada, provincial and federal laws pertaining to the care of the patient who is a victim of trauma, crime and violence are discussed. The specific areas of sexual assault, death investigation, child maltreatment, elder abuse, interpersonal violence, legal consulting are described with respect to the forensic roles and responsibilities of health care professionals. The interlinking roles of forensic science, law enforcement, judicial and health care professionals are defined and explored as related to health care today and for the future.

Learning Objectives:
- Analyze Canadian laws which impact the clinical practice of the health care professional.
- Outline the roles of health care professionals, law enforcement, judicial systems and forensic science in the care of victims of trauma, crime or violence.
- Evaluate the emerging role of the forensic nursing specialty in forensic health care.
- Outline specific roles and responsibilities of the forensic examiner; such as sexual assault, child maltreatment/abuse, elder abuse/maltreatment, interpersonal violence, anatomical gifts, organ donation and tissue recovery for transplantation, death investigator, and legal consultant.
