NATURE AND SCOPE
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) at Thorpe Recovery Centres is responsible for assessing, diagnosing, treating, and providing medical oversight of clients in both the medically supported detox and residential program, including overseeing Opioid Agonist Therapy (OAT) for clients in need. The NP works collaboratively with internal departments, external healthcare providers, and the CEO to ensure seamless care coordination and continuity for clients. The NP leads and manages medical services, ensuring high-quality, healthcare delivery, compliance with regulatory standards, and efficient coordination across all departments. The NP oversees medication management, provides training and guidance on medical best practices, and participates in quality improvement initiatives. Additionally, the NP assists with accreditation processes and responds to medical emergencies. Strong leadership, decision-making, and problem-solving skills are essential to support the organization’s strategic healthcare goals.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
– Providing general oversight for the medically supported detox and program clients, with regular reporting to the Chief Executive Officer.
– Offering on-call support for staff as needed.
– Providing leadership and strategic direction for health-related services and projects, ensuring high-quality services are delivered to TRC clients and families.
– Overseeing departmental training in alignment with TRC’s policies and procedures, including onboarding of new medical staff and ensuring HR compliance.
– Developing ongoing relationships with Physicians, pharmacists, and other healthcare providers.
– Facilitating case conferencing between family, clients, and staff, with direct communication and updates to the Chief Executive Officer.
– Assisting with daily medical operations and ensuring efficient use of resources to improve service delivery.
– Ensuring medical staff utilize the Electronic Medical Records (EMR) according to safe and competent standards and ensuring accurate documentation of client information and treatments.
– Conducting quarterly pharmacy documentation and order processing reports.
– Overseeing and assisting nursing staff with the delivery of health-related programs and content, including monitoring resource utilization to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
– Reporting and documenting incidents, adverse events, and near misses according to practice setting guidelines and policies.
– Demonstrating proficiency in operating, storing, and maintaining health equipment safely.
– Assessing, monitoring, and recognizing clients’ needs for substance use withdrawal management (“detox”) and post-acute withdrawal syndrome, and being familiar with treatments for substance use disorders.
– Overseeing and facilitating emergency situations and supporting all medical staff with de-escalation skills and mental health crisis management.
– Assisting the Senior Leadership team with accreditation Canada and medical policy and procedure continuity.
– Conducting regular audits with care plan implementation and communication utility among medical staff.
– Providing detailed information to clients regarding treatments, possible side effects, aftercare instructions, aftercare maintenance, or preventative care methods.
– Initiating healthcare treatment for health management, therapeutic interventions, and prescribing medications, including addiction-focused healthcare treatments according to CARNA NP scope of practice.
– Following CARNA NP standards of care including practice restrictions guidelines for all addiction-related healthcare services to inpatient care settings.
– Regularly reviewing and participating with updates to medical policies and procedures and ensuring alignment with all medical team members.
– Responsible for setting monitoring check frequencies with nurses.
Requirements
• Successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner program, with a minimum of a Master’s degree. Must hold active registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) on the Nurse Practitioner Registrar, including Provisional Graduate Nurse Practitioner licensure.
• Basic Cardiac Life Support – Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification.
• Minimum of two (2) years of recent Canadian full-time experience as a Nurse Practitioner, particularly in addiction and mental health.
• Experience in addiction and mental health treatment(s), with the ability to assess, diagnose, and treat a variety of mental health and addiction-related issues.
• Experience with CIWA-Ar, COWS, OAT therapies, detox, withdrawal management, and basic recovery programming.
• Knowledge of provincial and federal healthcare legislation, professional standards of practice, and a scope of care aligned with NP competencies. No restrictions on the NP license.
• Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check required upon hire and every two years of employment.
• Valid driver’s license and a current driver’s abstract required upon hire.
• Completion of Naloxone training and other mandatory training within the first three months of employment.
